War Bond Posters

"Every Scout to Save a Soldier" is the cry from one of many war bond posters stored in the archives of dealers who make a living at selling the war memorabilia. Antique shops that sell the collectible posters are overflowing with loads of other things, but the posters stand out in bright and subdued war colors reminiscent of the age. The promotional material from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War remind patrons that the posters stirred patriotic hearts and souls toward unselfish serving in the nations wartime effort.

Ranging in sizes that include 20x30 and 23x35, the posters hang on the walls or are rolled up and placed into protective sleeves for safe storage. War veterans who browse the shops are especially reminded of the heroic valor they displayed when they served their country in the Army, Navy, and Marines, or as airmen of the winged forces, flying bombers to drop their payloads on enemy forces.

Uncle Sam would be proud that the posters have been so well preserved, although many of them became worn, water stained, and tattered over the years, fished from attics or basements where they were stored to be later displayed in galleries such as these. Their preservation means national pride will not be lost in the recruitment process that used them for stirring patriotism and urging the civil public to buy war bonds.

Liberty bonds, as they were called during WW1, were the U.S. Treasury's way of financing a war that was costly to conduct. Like Victory Bonds, they offered a return on investment to the purchaser. But these bond issues would never have been a success in generating war funds, had it not been for the posters created by famous artists for the purpose of garnering national sympathy to the war effort.
